Question:

I expect to receive a lump-sum payment. How can I protect myself from becoming a victim of fraud?

Answer:

If you receive a lump-sum payment, there are some dishonest people or companies around who may try to trick you into giving them your money, or who might try to pressure you into buying some of their products. If this happens to you, be sure to contact the local police or RCMP detachment immediately. If you have information on a crime, or know of a crime that was committed against someone but do not want to give your name, call Crime Stoppers. You can also report telephone fraud or scams by calling PhoneBusters. For more information on scams, contact PhoneBusters to obtain a copy of their publication Canadian Practical Guide, or visit their Web site.
