Question:

Can something be charged to my credit card after I have cancelled it?

Answer:

No. Once a credit card has been cancelled, no new charges can be added to the card. However, there may be situations where charges will appear on your credit card statement even after the card has been cancelled. These include transactions that were authorized prior to the cancellation of the card, including recurring monthly transactions and transactions processed by merchants without your authorization.

To cancel any recurring transactions, contact the merchant, in writing. You should also notify all two credit bureaus in Canada to make sure that your credit file shows that your card has been cancelled. However, give the credit card issuer enough time to report the card cancellation to the bureaus (they need approximately 30 days).

To receive a free copy of your credit report and confirm that a note has been added to your file indicating that your card has been cancelled, contact the two major credit-reporting agencies listed below.

If you discover that your credit card has not been cancelled and that a transaction has been charged to your account without your permission, contact your credit card issuer immediately.
