Question:

How can I get more information about my credit report?

Answer:

When you apply for credit with a company, you are usually asked to give your consent to that company to obtain, verify and use the contents of your credit report. Once you have given your consent and signed a credit agreement, the company can send information about your payment history to the credit bureaus. This information becomes part of your credit history. Your credit report paints a picture of your past and current credit situation and how well you pay back your debts. A consumer credit report contains the following type of information:

  • personal identification, such as your name, address and birth date;
  • a list of all of the individuals or organizations who have requested a copy of your credit file in the past three years;
  • information about secured loans, bankruptcies, judgments and/or third-party collections;
  • details of your credit transactions and whether your payments are being made as agreed. These items are evaluated by the credit grantor and assigned a rating based on North American industry credit-granting standards;
  • at your request, a brief statement can be added to your file about any information contained in the file.

It is very important that this information be accurate. To make sure it is, ask for a copy of your credit report by contacting the two credit-reporting agencies listed below.
